Common darts terms and definitions. From scoring basics to game-specific terminology, this glossary covers everything you'll encounter while playing.

180
The maximum score from a single turn: three triple-20s (3 × 60 = 180). Also called a "maximum".
3-Dart Average
The average score per 3-dart turn over a game or session. A key performance metric in X01.
B
Bed
A specific scoring area on the dartboard (e.g., "single 20 bed", "triple 19 bed").
Bull / Bullseye
The center of the dartboard. Outer bull (single bull) scores 25 points. Inner bull (double bull / bullseye) scores 50 points.
Bust
In X01, when your remaining score drops below zero or to exactly 1. The turn is voided and the score reverts to what it was before.
C
Checkout
The final throw(s) needed to reach exactly zero in X01. Must end on a double when playing with Double Out.
Closed
In Cricket, a number is closed once it has been hit 3 times (3 marks). Closed numbers can then score points.
D
Double
The narrow outer ring of the dartboard. Scores 2× the segment's face value.
Double In
An X01 option where scoring doesn't begin until a double is hit.
Double Out
An X01 option requiring the final dart to land in a double segment to win.
F
First 9
The average score of a player's first 9 darts (3 turns). Indicates opening strength.
L
Leg
A single game within a match (e.g., first to 3 legs).
M
Mark
In Cricket, one hit on a target number. Doubles count as 2 marks, triples as 3.
Match
The full contest, which may consist of multiple legs or sets.
MPR
Marks Per Round. In Cricket, the average number of marks scored per 3-dart turn.
O
Oche
The throwing line. Standard distance is 2.37 m (7 ft 9.25 in) from the board face.
S
Set
A group of legs within a match (e.g., best of 5 legs = 1 set).
Shanghai
Hitting a single, double, and triple of the same number in one turn. An instant win in Shanghai mode.
Single
The large scoring areas between the triple ring and the outer double ring. Scores face value.
T
Ton
A score of 100 or more in a single 3-dart turn.
Ton-80
A perfect turn of 180 points (three triple-20s). Also called "maximum".
Triple
The narrow inner ring of the dartboard. Scores 3× the segment's face value. Also called "treble".
